The Loo Collectors

There is something odd about a boy in his teens whose dream is to be a loo collector. Who would want to empty smelly loo, much less have a regular job as a loo collector? Rolf did. In those days, a loo collector was paid a high salary but worked two hours less than other employees. The extra two hours to do as he wished and the fact that he does not have to identify himself with his job would make it worthwhile. In time Rolf understood that being a loo collector was not that easy; it meant working for long years as a regular garbarge collector before getting through the bottleneck of applicants who wanted the "plum job" of being a loo collector.

Rosalinda dreamed that one day she shall have her own exclusive universe where only people of her own choosing are allowed. Rosalinda never forgot the distinction between friends and relatives: one cannot choose one's relatives. The dream became like a faint shadow in the horizon as she grew up. There were always people who demanded her time and attention as if she existed like a mathematical function of "the tribe" and "the group" and everybody else.

Rolf did not even come close to being a garbage collector. Rosalinda did the best she could of what were not much of her own making. Neither knew there was somebody out there who thought as he and she did. Neither had any warning that one cloudy day in October 2000 they would meet.
